The Moscow Watchdog is one of the most deliberately engineered dog breeds in history — developed in the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s at the Red Star Kennel, a state-run military breeding facility outside Moscow, with the explicit goal of creating the ideal large-scale guard and military dog. Soviet breeders crossed the Saint Bernard — prized for its massive size, calm temperament, and cold-weather resilience — with the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, one of the most formidable livestock guardian breeds in the world, known for its fearlessness and territorial instincts. Russian Spotted Hounds were also incorporated to refine the breed's tracking ability and agility. The result is a giant, bear-like dog that combines the Saint Bernard's gentle, family-oriented nature with the Caucasian Shepherd's protective drive and physical power. Males typically weigh between 100 and 150 pounds and stand up to 27 inches at the shoulder. The Moscow Watchdog remains rare outside Russia and Eastern Europe, making it one of the more unusual giant breeds to encounter in the West.
